the perfect storm...
Globalisation of big business.
Population explosion.
Climate change.
Radicalisation of politics and religion.
A perfect storm.
The keyboard is mightier than the machine gun... The political, philosophical and general outpourings of a troubled soul living in Australia and blogging his Vietnam veteran's head off.
Nothing in this blog can be believed. If you think that anything in this blog is true or factual, you'll need to verify it from another source. Do you understand? No? Then read it again, and repeat this process, until you understand that you cannot sue me for anything you read here. Also, having been sucked into taking part in the mass-murder of more than 3 million Vietnamese people on behalf of U.S. Big Business "interests", I'm as mad as a cut snake (and broke) so it might be a bit silly to try to sue me anyway...

now it is likely that those 5 devloping problems are related. I think in fact that multiple relations exist and are in fact cause-effect relationships to a sufficient extent that one might ALL of the problems if it were possible to eliminate but one or two weaknesses of human nature.
Given the likelihood of that, I am resigned to agreeing with you: it is a storm to capsize the lot of us.
"Don't shot me, I'm just the weather forecaster..."
God, it reads like a wish list.
Santa: What do you want for Christmas little fella? (And don't just say Armageddon; be more specific.)
The Devil: Alright. Oil depletion, the globalisation of big business, a population explosion, climate change, the radicalisation of politics and religion and, last but not least, a perfect fucking storm. And Santa, don't forget any of this shit, yeah?
Santa: Does your mother know you've got such a crude tongue?
The Devil: I'm an orphan you maggot.
Ok, I'll be "positive":
Don't worry about oil depletion. We'll rediscover what Wilhelm Reich and Nikola Tesla were into, and provide unlimited, free electromagnetic energy for all.
Trust the global corporate giants, they have your interests at heart. They wouldn't know how to spell "slavery" if their lives depended on it.
There is no population problem. We will grow all the protein needed in huge petri dishes. Failing that we will eat the people whose lands we will need to acquire.
Climate change is a good thing. It will lead to ethnic cleansing and the gene pool will be so much better off afterwards. Trust me, human nature knows what it's doing.
Once we've killed all the radicals we don't approve of, things will be so much better. Kill all terrorists and extremists!!!
That which doesn't kill you, makes you stronger!!!
We know we're right, get out of our way!!!
Yo !!!
(How am I doin' ???)
You are doing very well.
A sub-dot-point: deregulation of international capital flows.
Didn't Keating do a bit of that by opening the shark gates to the Australian economy?
Heh - see what I posted a couple of minutes ago at VVB!
Phil, I've repeated the comment I made on your blog here so that readers of this blog can also interact with me about if they so choose.

You said "The argument goes that without protection, we stop doing things that don't add up economically and we will specialise in the things we do well."
[chortle]
When the naffers finally wake up, if ever, this little "wisdom" will be re-written thus:
The truth is, that without protection, we stop doing things that guarantee our freedom and we specialise in the things which destroy it. And the bastards who sold us into slavery propagandised their evil doings by calling them Free Trade Agreements.
How'm I doin'?
